I agree less with P J O'Rourke's opinion that "Canada is a nice place, but not for the whole weekend" and more with Jane Fonda, who asserts that "when I'm in Canada, I feel this is what the world should be like". The place is knock-out.

Initial impressions of Canada might be: French & British, wintery, wild and beautiful landscape and proudly independent of the USA. Culturally, these impressions need expansion. The winter is significant in Canada, with Quebec City offering a Winter Carnival in February and Ottawa its three-week "Winterlude" fete in February. Perhaps more famous is the Montreal Jazz Festival in June and the Ottawa Jazz Festival inn July, and less famous would be the Toronto "Caribana" Festival in August, which offers ethnic music, dance and food. You also have the Toronto Film Festival in September and the Calgary Stampede in July (a rodeo). Sport, of course, features large in Canada's cultural composition.
